Excellence in digital workplace innovation

Digital Workplace Group (DWG) is a business management consultancy, providing expertise, community, and insights for intranet and digital workplace professionals. The annual Digital Workplace of the Year Awards celebrate those organizations and practitioners that have excelled at creating well-executed, high-performing digital workplace environments.

The prestigious awards stand to give organizations the opportunity to share their digital workplace achievements with peers and gain global, industry recognition. With only 12 shortlisted entries per category from an outstanding pool of submissions, the results were announced at Digital Workplace Live.

This year, Foundation Medicine won the award for Modern Intranet of the Year (Medium-Sized Organization). Foundation Medicine joins a winner’s circle of well-known industry leaders, with other award winners including The Coca-Cola Company, Adobe, and John Lewis Partnership.

What does an award-winning intranet look like?

Foundation Medicine Inc. is transforming cancer care by providing patients, physicians, and researchers with a deep understanding of the genomic mutations that drive cancer. With 1800+ employees based in 8 different offices across the U.S. and in Germany, Foundation Medicine needed a way to ensure all employees had the right digital tools and platforms to be productive, collaborative, and informed, while still focusing on creating a top-notch employee experience.

Foundation Medicine’s intranet was established in 2017 with an employee audience of 400 and was desperate for an upgrade. In 2020 and in partnership with Intevity and Unily, Foundation Medicine began work to redesign and update the intranet to reflect the increased amount of news and information needed on the intranet for an 1800 employee company with a focus on achieving the following goals:

  • Provide a hub for information and easy knowledge sharing
  • Act as a digital headquarters for employees to use as an online ‘office’ to collaborate, communicate, and share experiences
  • Enable and reinforce an inclusive and cohesive culture for all

Foundation Medicine launched the revamped Hub in June 2021 as an all-encompassing healthcare intranet platform that would act as a one-stop-shop for employees to access and gain insights into everything they need to do their daily work and research while staying connected across many disparate offices.

In the current environment, 70% of Foundation Medicine’s workforce is remote, and The Hub has become the place employees visit daily for all the information they need. From gaining access to their internal applications, employee policies, and benefits information, to organizational charts, all-hands video recaps, DE&I content and much more; the entire workforce is also able to simultaneously experience Foundation Medicine’s positive and inclusive culture.

Foundation Medicine’s digital workplace strategy and vision offer staff the right digital tools and platforms to be productive, collaborative, and kept informed while still focusing on the overall employee experience. The Hub offers the most valuable and relevant content to boost employee engagement and introduce a clear, organized site experience that affords easy content discoverability.

In particular, DWG praised The Hub’s findability, connection, and personalization:

"We typically get some big players vying for DWG’s annual awards and they can be hard to beat for smaller organizations. For that reason, the judges wanted to acknowledge the entry from Foundation Medicine for its clear and straightforward strategy and rationale, good cross-functional stakeholder and employee engagement, and features that make finding key information and people easier with a clear tie back to the strategy."

One judge noted, “Findability, connection, and personalization are the key features shared here. These tie back to the strategy and business rationale relative to simplifying information, streamlining consistency, and empowering employees via self-service options.”

Foundation Medicine has worked with Unily to go above and beyond to ensure its intranet software is more than just a business tool – The Hub is completely employee-centric, designed by employees, for employees.
